Decades in the Making…

The business is the culmination of decades of formal study, research and practise in the natural health profession by the German born Professor Manfred Junius (1929-2004) and the Indian born Dr. Krishna Kumar, whose friendship began at the University of Allahabad in 1964 where Prof. Junius was an Assistant Professor of German language and Dr. Kumar was a student of the Arts.

With brilliant minds and a shared dedication to both medicine and artistic pursuits, Professor Junius and Dr Kumar embarked on a long partnership which resulted in great success in many fields such as, Indian Classical Music, Ayurvedic Medicine, Agriculture, Alchemy, Literature and, Arts & Culture. The pair embodied the principles of the ‘Renaissance Man’ and both have aspired to gain knowledge and expertise in every aspect of their humanity.

The REMEDY HERBALS products were formulated by Prof. Junius and Dr. Kumar after extensive studies and research into the Indian and Western herbal traditions. Dr. Kumar started his studies in Ayurveda in the 1950s as a young boy in the Indian traditional education system known as “Guru-Shishya Parampara” –the Teacher-Disciple tradition. As a matter of fact Dr. Kumar successfully treated Prof. Junius for Kidney stones in 1964 with Ayurvedic medicine. Prof. Junius was so impressed that he decided to commence his own studies in Ayurveda with various Ayurvedic experts.

Prof. Manfred Junius

Throughout the late 60’s and 70’s, Prof. Junius and Dr. Kumar lived in Europe where they conducted extensive research into the history of Western herbal medicine, particularly the knowledge of the Greeks and Romans which had been preserved in monasteries and various libraries in Southern Italy, particular in Salerno, Calabria and Sicily. As Professor Junius spoke 14 languages including Sanskrit, Latin & Greek, he was able to study original manuscripts and through years of study and research developed a profound understanding of the therapeutic properties of both Indian and European botanicals.

During the 1970s Professor Junius also spent much of his time in Europe studying Alchemy under the expert guidance of a renowned Swiss alchemist, Mr August Pancaldi, with a special interest in Plant Alchemy. He went on to write a number of texts on the subject, his most important publication being ‘The Practical Handbook of Plant Alchemy’ originally published in Italian titled “Alchimia Verde” by Edizioni Mediterranee in 1979. Since then it has been translated into English and several European languages and continues to be an essential resource for students and practitioners of Plant  Alchemy.

A Culmination of Wisdom

With the assistance and encouragement of the South Australian Government, Prof. Junius, along with Dr. Kumar and his family migrated to Australia in July 1979 from Italy, where they had lived for almost 10 years. Australia became a country of consolidation of their vast experience and knowledge. Australerba Herbal Products & Spagyric Laboratories was established in 1979. Prof. Junius and Dr Kumar were instrumental in bringing Ayurveda to Australia in 1982 with the establishment of the Australian School of Ayurveda in Adelaide where they invited Vaidya Bhagwan Dash, an eminent scholar and author of various books on Ayurveda, from India to give lectures to their Australian students. In 1983, Prof. Junius and Vaidya Bhagwan Dash co-authored the much celebrated publication: “A Handbook of Ayurveda”. In 1988, Prof. Junius, Dr. Kumar and their colleague, Mrs Athena Yiossis established the Australasian Association of Ayurveda Inc. which is the peak organisation for the profession of Ayurveda in Australia. From 1988 until 2016, Dr. Kumar was the President of the Association.

The REMEDY HERBALS range is the culmination of the combined knowledge and understanding of Herbalism and Plant Alchemy from both the Eastern and Western traditions. Many years were spent in developing, testing and ensuring that the existing products are safe and effective.
